● Why is the LED headlight so late?


As a matter of fact, electric lights have been invented for more than 150 years (obviously I'm not counting from Edison). What a LED looks like is a novelty. In fact, the origin of LEDs can also be traced back to 1907 more than 100 years ago. In that year, Henry Joseph Round, who was in the radio industry, applied a certain voltage to the silicon carbide crystal and observed a dim yellow light on the cathode. This should be regarded as the originator of the LED.


The actual significance of the LED was not invented until more than 50 years ago, so this time node in the 1960s was considered by many to be the real starting point for LED. With the continuous development of technology, the color of LED is also gradually expanded from the earliest red light, orange, yellow, green... Early LED is mainly used for light sources of various instruments, and indicator lights of various devices, followed by The increase in color began to apply to traffic lights, large displays, and car lights.



The previous LED was unable to emit the "white light" needed for headlight lighting because there was no "white light" in the visible light spectrum. Instead of monochromatic light, it was a combination of multiple monochromatic lights. The white light seen by the human eye requires a mixture of blue light and yellow light of two wavelengths or mixing of blue light, green light, and red light at three wavelengths (this is the three primary colors of a color TV). Since both methods require blue light, blue LEDs have become an important technology node for the development of white LEDs.


Until the end of the last century, with the successful development of ultra-bright blue LED, the development of white LED really achieved a phased progress. The color temperature of white LED is close to daylight, the lighting effect is more natural, and it is closer to the color seen by human eyes in the daytime. LED officially joined the field of lighting is also from this time.




The method of LED synthesis of white light is the two methods mentioned in the previous section. Currently, the use of blue LED chips, yellow phosphor phosphors, or yellow phosphor filters to form white LEDs is now widely used. Now it is widely used in daytime applications. Both the headlights and the white LEDs used as headlights use the same principle. The emergence of white LEDs can also be included in the history of the development of liquid crystal displays. Everyone must have noticed that many cars actually use LED taillights very early on, but LED headlights are only popular items in recent years.
